2025 Winter Carnival

A Frosty Celebration Brings Warmth to Port Austin

The Greater Port Austin Area Chamber of Commerce is pleased to reflect on another successful Winter Carnival. Despite the chilly temperatures and occasional snowflakes, attendees warmly embraced the winter spirit. The recent cold snap ensured perfect conditions for activities, making this year’s carnival one to remember.

Broomball: A Thrilling Winter Tradition

A highlight of the day, the Broomball Tournament saw fierce competition between two teams: the 2024 champions, Busch Light, and the previous winners, Lake Street Local. In a best-of-five series, Busch Light emerged victorious, securing the Broomball trophy once again. They remain the team to beat in 2026!

This Port Austin tradition would not be possible without the help of our dedicated coordinators and volunteers: Tyler Petit, Casey Bruce from Osentoski Realty, Doug Clancy from Gene Clancy & Sons, The Department of Public Works, and Danny Thuemmel. Special thanks to Judge Gerald Prill, who served as the entertaining MC, and referees Jim and Cooper Glidden for ensuring fair and safe play.

Polar Dip: A Chilly Tradition Returns

After several years of absence due to unsafe ice conditions, the Polar Bear Dip made a triumphant return. Nearly 20 brave souls took the icy plunge, cheered on by a lively crowd. Participants warmed up afterward in a mobile, wood-fired sauna provided by PONDER Sauna, a sponsor of the event. Alexander Vlachos, the wellness expert and owner of PONDER Sauna, shared valuable insights into cold therapy, sauna practices, and incorporating wellness into daily routines. Visit their website to learn more and book your sauna experience!

A huge thank you to the volunteers who ensured the safety and success of the Polar Bear Dip: Chris Roth, Cindy and Mike Lynch with Thumb Area Charter Captains Association. Volunteer Firemen, Jason Zimmerman with Zimmerman Electric, Jordan Gembarski from Jordan Gembarski Concrete, and Ted Williams from Dirty Time Landscaping. Kevin Jimkoski from the Port Austin Police Department, and Central Huron Ambulance Services. These dedicated individuals braved the cold weather and icy waters to drill the ice hole and keep participants safe.

Winter Farmers Market: A Delicious New Addition

Among Saturday’s festivities was the inaugural Winter Farmers Market, a wonderful new addition to the Winter Carnival lineup. Thirteen vendors set up shop at the Welcome Center from 10am to 3pm, offering a delightful mix of food, art, crafts, and accessories. The market was a hit, bustling with visitors throughout the day.

A heartfelt thank you to the vendors who made this event possible: Cabin Confections, Clements Bakery, Cool Harvest Essentials, LDB Piedmont Beef, Main Street Mercantile, Nick’s Nuts, Noodle Doodle Adventures, Oma’s Bakery, Our Little Farm, Polega's Handmade Pierogies, Szymanski’s Creekside Acres, Thacker’s Art, and Tranquility Plus.

The Winter Farmers Market will undoubtedly return in future years!

Something for Everyone

The two day event offered a packed schedule of activities, including a Yard Pong Tournament at Lake Street Local, Karaoke at The Landing Tavern, live music at the Port Austin American Legion Post#499 and Simms at the Garfield Inn, and much more. We extend our gratitude to our Chamber members for their contributions and coordination, which made the weekend so special.

Between Saturdays Broomball matches, attendees enjoyed games of Dodgeball and Tug-of-War, and some friendly competition in the Epic Beard and Crazy Snow Hat Contests. The turnout was fantastic, with participants and spectators alike cheering on the action. These activities added to the festive atmosphere and kept the energy high throughout the day. A special shoutout to North Huron Schools for lending their rope for tug-of-war and joining the event with hot cocoa and cookies for their cross-country fundraiser.

Thank You, Volunteers!

Winter Carnival wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of our incredible Board members and event volunteers. A heartfelt thank you to: Deanna Kid with the Butterfly House, Michael Goforth from Mercy Hill Church, Penny Ferreri with 4 Fishes Clayworks, Dawn McCune, and Diane Hatch. Your hard work and commitment ensured that Saturday’s activities ran smoothly and safely.
