Point Aux Burques Lighthouse

The Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse stands as a testament to Michigan's rich maritime history. Built in 1848, it ranks among the oldest lighthouses in the state and continues to serve as an active aid to navigation under the remote maintenance of the U.S. Coast Guard. Visitors to the lighthouse can explore its restored keeper's house and tower, which house a t reasure trove of historical artifacts from a bygone era. Additionally, the museum and gift shop offer a glimpse into the lighthouse's storied past, while guided tours provide an opportunity to climb the tower on select dates. Steeped in history and surrounded by the scenic beauty of Lighthouse Park, the Pointe aux Barques Lighthouse invites all to discover the enduring legacy of Michigan's coastal heritage.

The lighthouse's history is intertwined with that of the adjacent first-class life-saving station, which was established in 1876 to rescue victims of shipwrecks along Lake Huron's treacherous shoreline. Over its 62-year history, the station's brave crews conducted over 200 rescues, earning it a place in maritime lore. Today, restoration efforts are underway to preserve this historic site and make it accessible for public tours.
