Parks, Beaches & Trails

There are plenty of great parks to choose from in and around Port Austin. The Village itself, though only one-square mile in size, has 4 parks, including Veterans Waterfront Park and Bird Creek Park on the shoreline, both with sandy beaches, pavilions and play areas. At Gallup Park you’ll find baseball fields, basketball & volleyball courts, and even an ice rink in the winter months!

Another half dozen parks and beaches are close by (ten minutes or less from downtown).

Trails include a five-mile long hiking trail at Port Crescent State Park, hiking and off-road biking trails at the Huron County Nature Center, and the “Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail” for kayakers and canoeists.

Bird Creek Park is a seven acre day use park located in Port Austin. The first thing you notice at Bird Creek is the wooden boardwalk that goes halfway around the park along the beach with roofed picnic shelters overlooking the beach and the water. The park features a large picnic Pavilion adjacent to the playground and his home to the new Port Austin Splash Pad. A restroom and shower facility completes the park features.

Gallup Park offers modern recreational facilities, including tennis courts, baseball diamonds, basketball court, and a new ice rink during the winter months. The park's large pavilion near Port Austin Road is a great spot for family get-togethers.

With trails open year-round (dawn to dusk) and free to the public, the Nature Center is located in Michigan's Thumb, in between the shoreline towns of Caseville and Port Austin.

We also offer learning programs throughout the season. Follow us on facebook for more.

Take M-25 to Oak Beach and turn south on Oak Beach Road. Loosemore Road will be on your left, turn down Loosemore and the Nature Center will be on the left about 1/4 mile down.

Veteran's Waterfront Park is located on the shore of Lake Huronand includes the Veteran's Memorial, lawns, a lovely sandy beach, multiple sculptures, a new play structure and a pavilion which can be rented.
