The first thing you notice at Bird Creek is the wooden boardwalk that goes halfway around the park along the beach with roofed picnic shelters overlooking the beach and the water. With trails open year-round (dawn to dusk) and free to the public, the Nature Center is located in Michigan's Thumb, in between the shoreline towns of Caseville and Port Austin.

The Port Austin Reef Light is a lighthouse off the shore of Lake Huron, about 2.5 miles north of Port Austin. Sitting on a rocky reef, which is just north of the tip of the Thumb and a real hazard to navigation, the Reef Light warns boaters of the shallow water.
