History Talk: Thumb Fires of 1871 & 1881

8 p.m. – 9 p.m. (Refreshments at 7:45)

Port Austin History Center

1424 Pointe Aux Barques Rd. (One mile east of Port Austin)

Historian Alan Naldrett tells the dramatic story of the Michigan Thumb fires. It is unimaginable to picture whole cities burning, much less whole counties, but that was the case in 1871 and, remarkably, again in 1881. The combination of the two fires marked the end of the lumber industry in the Thumb and the clearing of the land for agriculture. Naldrett’s book, “Michigan’s Great Thumb Fires of 1871 and 1881,” will be available for purchase.
